Statement from Mayor Wilson on Weekend Violence

“I am devastated by the loss of two young people this weekend – one at his place of work in Lake City, and the other at her off-campus student housing. I am devastated for their family and friends now grieving, and for this loss that will be felt over many communities and across our city.

My team has been in communications with the young man’s family, as well as his colleagues where he worked. We are also working with the University of Washington and the UW Q Center to provide support to the communities who surrounded this young trans woman.

My office is working with the Seattle Police Department as they are pursuing leads in both cases.

Every young person deserves not just to feel, but to be safe, supported, and surrounded by a community that believes in them and in their future. From Lake City, to the University District, to the Rainier Valley, where another young man was seriously injured in a shooting late Friday night.

Even in moments of profound loss, we have a responsibility to keep building a city rooted in care, where everyone can live and grow. This remains an urgent call that we must do more.
