In recent days, many of you have shared stories about rising intimidation and harassment directed at your communities. These incidents are affecting multiple immigrant communities across our city. From hostile rhetoric, to individuals targeting family-owned businesses with intimidating behavior, to increased immigration enforcement activity in your neighborhoods, these actions create real fear. You do not have to carry that fear alone.
My office is sustaining four million dollars in ongoing support for immigrant and refugee communities, funding legal services, rapid response, and assistance for immigrant workers and small businesses.
Seattle remains a welcoming city, one that has no place for harassment, threats, and doxing. If you are threatened or in danger, call 911. To report a bias incident, contact the Seattle Office for Civil Rights. We will keep upholding the local and state laws that protect immigrant residents. For help understanding your rights, the Office of Immigrant and Refugee Affairs is here for you.
Everyone in Seattle has role to play. Stand with your immigrant neighbors by supporting immigrant-owned small businesses. When these businesses thrive, our entire city thrives.

- OED’s Storefront Security Fund can be used to fund physical beautification improvements and security cameras aligned with a Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) security assessment.
- OLS’ Community Outreach and Education Fund program partners, in partnership with OIRA, builds capacity among, and in partnership with, community-based organizations who can increase workers’ knowledge of Seattle labor standards and focuses on workers who are at high risk for labor standards violations.
General tips from OED for businesses experiencing harassment, threats, or heightened scrutiny.
- Train staff to not engage with instigators on social media or in-person
- If media is required, pick a calm spokesperson
- Online harassment
- Screenshot all threats, comments, and fake reviews and report them
- Report fake reviews on Google or Yelp. They have policies to remove sudden off-topic review spikes.
- Threats of violence should go to the police.
- In-person
- Train staff to disengage from any confrontation and call 911 for any threat or vandalism. Ideally designate on person to respond to these issues.
- Install visible signage to signal private areas in a business establishment and “no filming without permission” signs.
